GDPR: final countdown
On 25 May 2018, the General Data Protection Regulation — GDPR — will take effect for all residents of the European Union. It is a new European regulation governing the processing and circulation of personal data. It imposes a series of obligations on every business that processes personal data concerning how its customers' personal data is handled and used.
For example, from that date businesses will first need to obtain a website user's explicit written consent authorising the processing of their personal data.
The general aim is to strengthen the protection of citizens. In all circumstances, they have the right to request deletion of personal data held by a business. The new regulation also provides an opportunity to regain customer trust and reassure customers about how their data is used.
From 25 May 2018, businesses that fail to comply with the regulation will face substantial penalties, up to €20 million for a public authority and 4% of worldwide annual revenue for a business.
What does this mean for accounting professionals?
All accounting firms are affected by GDPR whenever they collect personal data, whether for their clients or for internal purposes. This can include a name, gender, date of birth, telephone number, email address or professional registration number — in other words, any information that can identify a natural person.
How do you comply?
Very large companies will be required to appoint a Data Protection Officer — DPO. Their role primarily involves informing and advising those responsible for data processing, raising awareness and training staff, ensuring compliance with the law and cooperating with the CNIL, France's data protection authority. Although appointing a DPO is not mandatory for most accounting firms, it is strongly recommended by the CNIL.
96%
This is the percentage of businesses using cloud services in 2018, according to McAfee's annual cybersecurity report. The figure is rising, from around 93% in 2017.
1 January 2019
This is the date when withholding tax will be introduced. From that date, tax will be deducted each month by the employer, directly according to the employee's remuneration.
Improvements to Tempolia
Use longer customer codes
Would you like your customer codes to contain more than five characters? Good news: we have increased their character limit. Previously limited to five characters, customer codes can now contain up to ten.
Send messages to connected workstations
Some changes in Tempolia require exclusive access to the software. For example, do you want to recode selected customer codes so that they contain more than five characters? You can now send a message directly to every workstation connected to Tempolia asking users to leave the software.
Approve and lock your staff's time
Does a designated person approve other staff members' time? If so, this new feature will be particularly useful. We have added an option that enables authorised users to approve and lock time. Staff can no longer edit time entries unless an authorised person unlocks them.

Discover all these improvements by downloading the latest version of Tempolia from your account.
